This is the support page for Serverfach. Questions, a bug or a wish? Write to me:

Email: info@gtools.me

To get a quick answer, please include your device (Mac, iPhone or iPad), the system version, the Serverfach version, the connection type (SFTP, FTP or FTPS) and the exact error message. Please do not send passwords, keys or confidential files.

More about the app: gtools.me/serverfach/en/

Add a server: Create a new connection (iPhone and iPad: the plus button “Neue Verbindung”; Mac: in the Serverfach window) and enter the address, user name and password or SSH key. “Verbindung testen” (test connection) checks your entries. On first contact Serverfach shows the server’s fingerprint or certificate; compare it with the details from your provider and confirm only if it matches.

On the Mac the server appears in the Finder after connecting. On iPhone and iPad it appears in the Files app under “Locations”; if not, open “Browse” in the Files app, tap “⋯” at the top, choose “Edit” and switch Serverfach on.

No server at hand? Use “Demo ausprobieren” (see below).

How do I try Serverfach without a server of my own?

Start the demo mode (“Demo ausprobieren” on the start screen on iPhone and iPad, “Demo ausprobieren …” in the menu on the Mac). It contains a sample server that runs entirely on the device, without a network. Changes in it do not affect any real server.

Which connection types are supported?

SFTP (SSH), FTP and FTPS (explicit with AUTH TLS and implicit). For FTP and FTPS, Serverfach uses passive mode. Plain FTP is not encrypted; use SFTP or FTPS where possible.

Where are passwords and SSH keys stored?

On Mac, iPhone and iPad only in your device’s Keychain. The passphrase of an SSH key is used there only to unlock it and is not stored; the key is kept in the Keychain afterwards. In the Android app, passwords, keys and – if entered – passphrases are stored encrypted in the app’s private storage (key in the Android Keystore); they are not transferred even when you use the optional sync with your G-Tools account. Serverfach sends no credentials to me or to anyone other than your own server.

What does the fingerprint or certificate prompt mean?

On first connection Serverfach shows the server’s fingerprint (SFTP) or, for FTPS, a certificate the system does not trust. Compare the value with the details from your provider and confirm only if it matches. The confirmation is remembered; the connection settings offer “Vertrauen zurücksetzen” (reset trust).

Does deleting in the Finder delete the file on the server?

Yes. What you delete in the Finder or the Files app is deleted on the server. There is no recycle bin there, and Serverfach cannot bring deleted files back.

The server does not show up in the Files app.

In the Files app open “Browse”, tap “⋯” at the top, choose “Edit” and switch Serverfach on. Also check in the app that the connection has been tested and works.

My server is on my home network (NAS) and Serverfach cannot find it.

iOS, iPadOS and macOS ask whether Serverfach may access devices on the local network. Allow it in the system settings (“Privacy & Security” → “Local Network”) and check the address and port.

Is there an update check?

The App Store version does not check for updates itself; updates come through the App Store. The Mac download version from gtools.me has its own update check, see the privacy policy (German).

Serverfach has no telemetry and no ads and needs no account. Only in the Android app can you optionally use your G-Tools account to sync your list of connections; you can delete the synced data or your whole account at gtools.me/serverfach/konto-loeschen/ (German). Details: privacy policy (German, with an English summary), legal notice (German).
