Only record when everyone agrees. Record conversations, meetings and events only if all participants have agreed. Recording without consent may not be permitted; you are responsible for this yourself.
Mitschnitt is a small menu bar app for the Mac (Apple silicon, macOS 14 or later) and free in the Mac App Store. It records an app or a single window of your choice together with that app's audio as a video file, for example an online meeting, a training session or a webinar. You can choose Zoom, among others, as the source; the meeting window is then found automatically.
- Source: Zoom (meeting window found automatically), an entire app or a single window, even if the window is covered
- Audio: only from the chosen app; optionally your microphone as well (macOS 15 or later, off by default)
- Format: .mp4 with H.264 and AAC, fixed video size 1920 × 1080
- Location: saved locally in the folder “Movies/Mitschnitt”; the file name starts with a prefix you set, followed by date and time
- Optional schedule: record automatically on fixed weekdays and times (off after installation in the Mac App Store version)
- Menu bar menu: start and stop recording, choose the source, open the folder, Settings, launch at login
- German and English (follows the system language)
- Recordings stay on your Mac: no account, no network connection, no telemetry

Helpful for a quick answer: your Mac model, the macOS version, the Mitschnitt version from the Mac App Store, the chosen source (for example Zoom or another app) and a short description of what happened and what you expected. Please do not send recordings that contain private content or recordings of other people.
Which permission does Mitschnitt need?
Mitschnitt needs permission for screen and system audio recording: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, and switch on “Mitschnitt”. In Mitschnitt's Settings you see the status under “Permission”, and “Open System Settings” takes you straight there. If you switch on the microphone option, macOS also asks for microphone permission.
Where are my recordings?
In the folder “Movies/Mitschnitt” in your home folder (~/Movies/Mitschnitt). In the menu bar menu, “Open folder” opens this folder. The files stay on your Mac.
How do I record automatically?
In Settings, switch on “Record automatically” under “Schedule” and use “Add time slot” to set weekdays and times (“From” and “to”). The source you chose last also applies to scheduled recordings. If the source is not there yet at the start, Mitschnitt tries again every 30 seconds.
The recorded window is minimized. What happens?
The audio keeps recording, and the picture is frozen until the window is visible again. Mitschnitt points this out during a running recording.
Mitschnitt collects no data, needs no account and has no network access in the Mac App Store version. Your recordings stay on your Mac. Details are in the privacy policy (section “App Mitschnitt”; the policy is available in German only).
